The District of Sault Ste. Marie Social Services Administration Board is searching for a Commander of Paramedic Services to join our team based in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Commander of Paramedic Services is responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of the District of Sault Ste. Marie Paramedic Services (DSSMPS) within the legislated standards for land ambulance operation. The Commander of Paramedic Services will ensure delivery of quality emergency pre-hospital care and non-emergency medical transportation, and they will also respond to ambulance calls providing patient care as required.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Supervise all field staff in the geographic area of coverage of Sault Ste. Marie
  • Observe care of Primary Care Paramedics in the ambulance, on scene, and at the hospital
  • Perform duties of other managers in their absence if assigned to do so
  • Ensure staff receive remedial education and discipline as necessary or as assigned
  • Required to work shift work and must maintain their PCP Certification at the local level of care.
  • Highly variable working conditions, including time spent in an office environment.
  • Ensure staff wear appropriate PPE when necessary
  • Ensure staff are following the practices of the communicable disease management with the guidelines of the PC&T Standard
  • Ensure staff have required H&S equipment and supplies in vehicles and at stations
  • Work closely with staff and provide direction or referral to health care providers, crisis services or EAP after traumatic calls
  • Ensure Staff complete all required documentation to Ontario Ambulance Documentation Standards
  • Complete performance appraisals for assigned staff
  • In conjunction with senior management, receive, investigate and document Complaint Stage Grievance information and other disciplinary matters
  • Ensure equipment and vehicle maintenance programs are completed as necessary to relevant policies and standards
  • Mitigate, repair and / or report mechanical breakdowns or service requests to Support Services or repair/service companies as necessary
  • Initial Incident Commander in the event of a major incident (large MCI, unexpected weather event / natural disaster, terrorism event, etc.)
  • Ensure interoperability and communications with Allied resources maintained
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate will have strong leadership capabilities and competencies that foster a collaborative working style, and a demonstrated ability in written and verbal communication. The ideal candidate will also have research, analytical, problem solving and decision making skills, and a basic working level of office technology including Microsoft Office suite, and ePCR software.

Additional qualifications for this position include:

  • Primary Care Paramedic Credentials, as per the Ambulance Act including Base Hospital Certification
  • IMS 100 certification or equivalent
  • A combination of (5) five years of industry/field experience combined with (2) two years of supervisory experience is preferred in either an acting or full-time role within a unionized environment
  • Valid Class F Driver’s License
  • Access to a reliable vehicle
  • Preference will be given to those candidates with operations management/supervisor, quality assurance and/or paramedic education experience
  • Scheduling experience with 24/7 operations; including on-call responsibilities is an asset
  • Ability to communicate in both official languages is considered an asset
