RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Janitorial (85%)
● Follow accepted industry practices as outlined by the American Physical Plant
Association (APPA).
● Complete all cleaning functions as directed throughout the entire campus, including
but not limited to:
○ Clean all areas, surfaces, and equipment.
○ Sanitize and disinfect washrooms, food service areas, lunch rooms, cafeteria,
and garbage containers.
○ Empty garbage containers and recycling bins.
○ Dust mop and wet mop floors and stairwells using appropriate equipment.
○ Spray buff, strip, and wax floors as directed.
○ Vacuum and steam clean or shampoo carpeting and furniture.
B. Building Safety & Security (10%)
● Monitor building equipment and physical assets and report any visible defects to Maintenance staff.
● As part of regular duties, check all buildings and secure areas as per policies/procedures under the direction of the Manager, Physical Plant.
● Monitor all plant safety equipment and alarm systems for issues, and contact appropriate staff when required.
● Provide complete and accurate incident and accident reports to the Manager, Physical Plant in a timely fashion and with all required information.
● Maintain safe and secure access to all doors, offices, classrooms, and main entry doors including snow removal in the winter.
● Check and log appropriate identification and authorization of any person or persons accessing buildings during building closure hours.
● Ensure contractors sign in and out in log books.
● Ensure Health and Safety Regulations and Policies are maintained in all Plant areas and report any abuses accordingly.
● Assist in school functions by limiting and/or monitoring property uses, access, and events.
C. Other Duties (5%)
● Assist with additional emergency snow removal, as needed.
● Set up and take down in room(s) where special events occur, as directed.
● Notify the Manager, Physical Plant of all supply requirements and process work orders.
● Other duties, as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical Effort- Considerable Frequent and lengthy periods of heavy physical effort; physical effort required for lifting and handling of materials, machines, and equipment
Physical Environment – Considerable Physical/Moderate Hazardous
May be required to assist with essential services in the event of closure due to storms/emergencies; various seasons will affect priorities in day-to-day work (e.g. floors may require extra attention, and differing janitorial procedures in the winter months)
Sensory Attention – Moderate – Work activities involve the need to concentrate on a variety of sensory inputs/tasks for intermediate durations, requiring attention several times a day
Mental Stress – Moderate – Requires some shift work and weekend work; may be required to work during the winter holiday shutdown period; may be required to work independently/alone; may be required to perform safety and security duties during unscheduled shutdowns
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
● A Grade 12 diploma, and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in commercial or institutional cleaning, caretaking, housekeeping, janitorial services, and/or custodial duties, including some security responsibilities, is required.
● First Aid/CPR certification is considered an asset.
● Knowledge and understanding of health, safety, and security procedures.
● Demonstrated ability to handle all janitorial equipment, including floor maintenance equipment and institutional or industrial cleaning applications.
● Vulnerable Police Sector Check is required.
Salary Scale: $46,256 to $57,819 annually
