Job Summary
The Educational Program Coordinator is primarily responsible for developing and delivering educational content to varying audiences in a variety of settings. The Educational Programming Coordinator must be capable of designing curriculum-based content that considers the needs of the audience. This role manages all aspects of educational and outreach bookings, including customer service, booking, delivery and invoicing. In addition, the Educational Program Coordinator is part of the animal-care team and is expected to care for animals as per established policies and regulations; duties may include feeding, cleaning, testing and more. As an Entomica team member, the Educational Program Coordinator will assume other duties and roles as required, including, but not limited to, grant writing, research and assisting with events and outreach. This is a one-year contract subject to funding approval. You must meet all requirements to be eligible.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Facilitate education programs at our facility in Sault Ste. Marie and locations within and outside the community (travel and weekend work required).
- Provide public tours and program delivery to tourists, students (classes from primary to college and university level) and special community groups at our facility.
- Design and prepare travelling insect exhibits.
- Develop educational programming/presentations and/or update existing programming and presentations, considering curriculum requirements and Entomica’s objectives.
- Work with, train and direct volunteers and students.
- Learn and assist with insect husbandry and insect handling/demonstration.
- Effectively and professionally communicate with clients and stakeholders- email, phone, etc.
- Create and maintain programming schedules.
- Make bookings and facilitate Invoicing/payments related to programming.
- Comply with all policies and procedures, including CFIA regulations.
- Develop social media-Facebook posting, webpage content, Instagram and job-related emails.
- Support fundraising event delivery, outreach and grant project research, as necessary.
- Report to SSM Insectarium Director of Operations and the Board of Directors.
- Daily cleaning, feeding and housekeeping duties.
- Other duties, as assigned.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required
- A post-secondary degree or diploma in an environmental, scientific, or educational-related program.
- Minimum 2 years customer service and/or education experience.
- Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working or volunteering in a learning environment, an asset.
- Experience delivering presentations to groups in an in-person or virtual setting.
- Demonstrated ability to and/or experience preparing interactive and educational presentations.
- Demonstrated competency using computers, the Microsoft Office Suite and social media.
- Ability to work independently and as a team.
- Self-starter with good attention to detail and a passion for excellence.
- Motivation to learn about insects, their biology and ecology.
- Demonstrated comfort handling live insects and a variety of other animals.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Willingness to travel outside of the city, as required, with advance notice.
Eligibility Requirements
- Current Vulnerable Sectors background check.
- Valid driver’s license and vehicle access for travel.
- Meets all requirements under the “Eligible Candidate” definition.
“Eligible Candidate” means an individual who:
- is either a new entrant into the workforce, is transitioning to a new career, or is unemployed or underemployed and is entering a new field,
- has not previously participated in NOHFC’s People & Talent Program,
- is at least 18 years of age,
- resides in Northern Ontario, and
- is legally entitled to work in Canada.
Wage
- $20/hr
- Full-time position with 35 hours per week

The Sault Ste. Marie Insectarium, also known as Entomica, is looking for a Tour Guide to assist us with our insect exhibit at our fantastic location at the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre (50 Pim St.). The Tour Guide’s key duties are to engage with visitors, assist with insect care, and help promote Entomica’s mission. The successful candidate will be customer-oriented with an engaging personality and will be passionate about nature and willing to explore new skills.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- To provide educational, hands-on interactive tours for visitors, at our facility and outreach events (community and fundraising).
- To assist with animal husbandry (feedings, cleaning of enclosures and more), and laboratory and exhibit space cleanliness.
- To assist curator and full-time staff with projects, programs and special events and social media.
- Become knowledgeable about animals in the facility.
- Follow Health and Safety guidelines.
- Work in a team setting.
- Help maintain security of the animals and facility.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Experience and Skills Required:
- Enrolled in or recent graduate of a post-secondary program.
- Motivation to learn about insects, their biology and ecology.
- Comfortable with handling live insects.
- Excellent personal interaction skills.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Must be self-motivated.
- Applicants must have a current vulnerable sector check.
Eligibility Requirements (Canada Summer Jobs) This position is funded by the Government of Canada through the Canada Summer Job program. You must be aged between 15 and 30 and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
